Algeria's presidency of the UN Security Council in January 2025

 

Algeria, as usual, contributes effectively to defending just causes, mediation and peaceful settlement of conflicts at the regional and international levels.

Algeria's presidency of the Security Council in January 2025, which has just ended, was marked by several notable events, which can be summarized as follows:

1- Meeting statistics:

- January 2025 was a special month for the Security Council, with a significant increase in the work program. Initially, 16 meetings were scheduled to be held on January 2, then this number rose to 37 meetings by January 31, a record number for the month of January compared to previous years (January 2024 recorded 29 meetings, and January 2023 recorded 28 meetings).

- A total of 19 ministerial-level representatives participated in the high-level meetings chaired by the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs on 20 and 21 January 2025, dedicated to the Palestinian cause and the fight against terrorism in Africa.

- The majority of the meetings held focused on Middle Eastern issues, with 16 meetings recorded, and 10 other meetings focused on African issues.

- An emergency meeting was held on Sunday, during the last weekend of January, dedicated to examining the situation in the Republic of Congo, in light of the latest developments in that country.

2- Results:

Under the presidency of Algeria, the Security Council adopted a total of eleven resolutions on all issues:

- Four resolutions

- Three presidential statements

- Three press statements

- The members of the Council also approved the press items related to the Lebanon issue

3- Elements of evaluation of the Algerian presidency of the Security Council:

The Algerian presidency of the Security Council was widely welcomed, both by the members of the Council and by other member states of the United Nations. As evidence of this:

- During the meeting dedicated to presenting the results of the Algerian presidency for the month of January 2025, several countries praised the high level of the Algerian presidency, highlighting the wise choice of topics, the response to the emergencies that occurred during this month (Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan) as well as the number and quality of the decisions adopted.

- The reception organized by the Permanent Mission of Algeria in New York on the occasion of the end of the Algerian presidency witnessed a record participation, both in terms of the number and the quality of the guests present. This event was attended by all the permanent representatives of the Council members.

- There were also very positive echoes recorded by many observers in New York, including journalists, international research centers and others.
