The National Anthem

The National Anthem

The Algerian poet Mufdi Zakaria (1908-1977) wrote the lyrics of the national anthem in 1956 while imprisoned in Serkadji (Barbarossa) Prison in Algiers during the war of independence against the French colonial power. The music was composed in 1956 by Mohamed Triki and later revised by the Egyptian composer Mohamed Fawzi. After Algeria gained independence on July 5, 1962, "Qassaman" became the national anthem of Algeria.
